Wise Heart – 11.20.07

We can't study the heart and pass over all the references in the book of Proverbs to a "wise" heart. We studied this in Sunday school a few months back…here's a refresher.

DEFINITION OF WISDOM

  • application of knowledge

  • adherence to God's commandments (Deuteronomy 4:6; Proverbs 28:7)

  • the fear of the Lord (Job 28:28; Psalm 111:10; Proverbs 9:10; 15:33)

  • prudence – it's okay to be a "prude" (Proverbs 8:12; 16:21; 22:3)

IMPORTANCE OF WISDOM

  • the principal thing (Proverbs 4:7)

  • worth whatever price (Proverbs 23:23)

  • more valuable than rubies (Proverbs 8:11)

  • worth more than gold (Proverbs 16:16)

  • likened to strength and weapons of war (Ecclesiastes 9:16-18)

PURSUIT OF WISDOM

  • Realize God is the source, not you (Proverbs 23:4; 3:7; Isaiah 5:21; Romans 12:16)

  • Go to the source (Proverbs 2:3-6; James 1:5; Psalm 19:7)

  • Keep your mouth shut and your ears open (James 1:19; Proverbs 1:5; 13:20; 17:28; 19:20)

Why do we read the Bible? Why do we study the Bible? What is the purpose of receiving instruction from God's word at the church house? It's not to obtain knowledge. It's to use that knowledge in the service of God and others. It's to apply God's truths and use them to edify the body of Christ (1 Corinthians 8:1).

Are you wise?
